What Our Customers are Saying
Beyond impressed with the quality, craftsmanship, and service Southern Scape brought to our home. Our front yard was due an upgrade. From the start, Southern Scape sent employees that saw our vision and enhanced our ideas. Their staff were dedicated, polite, and professional. The actual transformation that happened in our front yard almost seemed like magic. The finished product not only adds aesthetically pleasing value to our home, but a genuine joy for the artistry constructed. We find ourselves going outside daily to admire, and have had multiple neighbors inquire about who did our yard. Thank you, Southern Scape!
We contracted Southern Scape for flower beds, turf grass, and tree treatments. Gerard was a great Project Manager. He communicated well and addressed any ‘snags’ that came up. The turf company was a bit delayed, but Gerard was able to handle it and keep us informed. Once everything went into place, the work was quick and the quality was awesome. Gerard went out of his way to make us happy and to ensure all subs were working in sync with us and Southern Scape. Couldn’t ask for a better Project Manager. Well done!
Landscape Design, Hardscape & Outdoor Living in Huntsville, AL
Southern Scape has designed and built landscapes across Huntsville and Madison since 1996, more than a thousand of them. One team carries each project from the first walk of the property to the last plant set: the design, the stonework, the water and the light. That continuity is the point. The designer who drew your retaining wall knows why it bends where it does, and the crew that builds it knows what the drawing assumed about the ground underneath.
What we design and build
- Landscape design: master plans drawn to your lot, built in one season or phased over several
- Patios and paver driveways and walkways, laid on bases built for North Alabama clay
- Outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, and pergolas and pavilions
- Retaining walls and stone masonry, plus fences, gates and columns
- Pools and spas and water features and ponds
- Landscape lighting and irrigation that keep the whole investment working after dark and through August
- Landscape maintenance and commercial landscaping for the properties we build and the ones we inherit
Built for North Alabama Ground
Landscapes in the Tennessee Valley fail in predictable ways. The red clay under most of Madison County drains slowly and heaves through the freeze-thaw swings of a Huntsville winter, so a patio laid on a thin base settles by its second spring. Limestone sits close under much of the valley floor and turns up when you least want it. The slopes off Monte Sano, Green Mountain and Keel Mountain push storm water across a lot faster than most homeowners expect.
We design for all of it from the first visit: grading and drainage before stone, compacted bases sized for the load they carry, retaining walls with real footings and drainage behind them, and planting chosen for long, humid summers. It is the unglamorous half of the work, and it is why our patios, walls and kitchens are still standing straight years after the photographs were taken.
Where We Work: Huntsville, Madison & the Tennessee Valley
Our office is on Sullivan Street in Madison, and most of our work happens within about 35 miles of downtown Huntsville: neighborhoods from Hampton Cove and Jones Valley to Clift Farm and Edgewater, and the towns around them, including Harvest, Meridianville, Hazel Green, New Market, Gurley, Owens Cross Roads, Athens, Decatur and Guntersville. Recent work includes covered outdoor kitchen pavilions and a dark-bottom pool in Madison, brick seat walls and steps in Athens, and limestone fireplaces on Lake Guntersville. Questions Homeowners Ask Us
What areas do you serve?
Huntsville, Madison and the towns within roughly 35 miles, including Harvest, Meridianville, Hazel Green, Owens Cross Roads, Athens, Decatur and Guntersville. Larger projects sometimes take us farther, so if you are outside that circle, call and ask.
Do you design and build, or only design?
Both, under one roof. Our in-house designer draws the plan, and our own licensed, insured crews build it under a dedicated project manager. You can also start with a master plan and build it in phases.
What does a landscape project cost?
It depends on the site as much as the design. Grade, access, drainage and soil shape the number as much as the materials do, which is why we price from a site visit and a plan rather than a chart, and why the first consultation is free.
Is your work warrantied?
Yes: one year on workmanship and six months on plant material, from a company that has been in Madison since 1996.
Where Would You Like to Begin?
Most of our projects start in one of three places: a patio that finally makes the backyard usable, a master plan that gives the whole property a direction, or the feature the family has wanted for years — a pool, an outdoor kitchen, a fireplace for October evenings. Wherever yours starts, browse everything we build, see thirty years of finished work in our portfolio, or tell us about your property and we’ll walk it with you.
